Lawrence Arney

 

 

Lawrence Arney, age 75, of Avery Branch Rd, Mountain City, passed away, Wednesday, January 04, 2006, at Johnson City Medical Center.

Lawrence was a lifetime resident of Johnson County and was a son of the late Ed and Liza Moody Arney. He was a charter member of Dry Run Volunteer Fire Department and was a member and Deacon of Bakers Gap Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Jean Guy Arney; daughter, Carol Arney Stout; son, Johnny Arney and wife Kathryn; two sisters, Hazel Clawson and Alma Timbs; brother, Maurice Arney and wife, Mary; three grandchildren, Jonathan Stout, Derik Stout, and Bridget Arney and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 7, 2006, at Bakers Gap Baptist Church with the service to follow at 2:00 p.m. with Dr. James Richardson officiating. The interment will follow in Mast Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Johnny Stanton, Larry Stanton, Marvin Arney, Dean Arney, Jonathan Stout,  Derik Stout and Eddie Clawson..

The family will also receive friends at the home, 1385 Avery Branch Rd., Mountain City.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Johnson County Rescue Squad, 203 Vandilla Street, Mountain City, TN 37683. The family expresses special thanks to the staff of Fresenius Medical Care, Dialysis Service.

 

Lucille J. Reece

 

Lucille J. Reece, age 88, of Trade, TN, passed away Saturday, January 7, 2006, at Watauga Medical Center.

Lucille was a lifelong resident of Johnson County and a daughter of the late Noah and Effie Johnson Jenkins. She was a member of Centerview Church of Christ.

In addition to her parents Mrs. Reece was also preceded in death by her husband William M. Reece and two sisters, Ella Rae Zebley and Jewell Mae Goff.

Survivors include four sons, William E. Reece and wife Carole of Longview, Washington, Lewis Reece and wife Beverly of Castlerock, Washington, Harvey Reece and wife Marie of Trade, TN. and Noah Reece and wife Sharon of Johnson City, TN; ten grandchildren, Tanya Lyle, Brian Reece, Diane Parker, Karen McRary, Paula Dubois, Gary Reece, Terry Reece, Melissa Brown, Amy Townsend and Mattie Reece; 13 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

The family of Mrs. Reece will receive friends from 6:30 until 7:45 P.M. Tuesday, January 10, 2006 at the funeral home with the service to follow at 8:00 P.M. with Bart Wynegar, Minister and Bill Reece, Minister officiating. Pallbearers will be members of the Johnson County Rescue Squad. The committal service and interment will be conducted at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, January 11, 2006 at Mountain View Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Johnson County Rescue Squad, 203 Vandilla Street, Mountain City, TN. 37683.

 

 

 

Kendall McKeown

 

Kendall Paul “Mac” McKeown, age 73, of Fred Price Road, Mountain City, passed away, Sunday, January 15, 2006 at Life Care Center of Elizabethton.

Mac was a native of Lake City Michigan and a son of the late Claude and Winnaford Thortan McKeown. He was a retired veteran of the U. S. Army and served his country in Germany, Korea and Vietnam. He moved to Johnson County in 1985 and worked as a truck driver and was an employee of Maymead.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rita King McKeown and two sisters, Peggy June Mckeown and Bonnie Esterline and his faithful companion, Little Bit.

Survivors include a daughter, Shannon Brown of Gray, TN; a son, Ricky McKeown and wife, Lisa of Mountain City; two brothers, Darral McKeown of Lake City, MI and Wendall McKeown of Lansing MI; three grandchildren, Courtney McKeown, Roger and Christopher Brown; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:45 pm Tuesday, January 17, 2006 at the funeral home. The service will be conducted at 8:00 pm following the visitation with Rev. Clyde Campbell officiating. The committal service will be conducted at 2:00 pm Thursday, January 19th at Akard Field Cemetery with full military honors conducted by Johnson County Honor Guard.

The family will also receive friends at any time at the home, 253 Fred Price Road, Mountain City.


 

Douglas Shelton

 

Douglas Shelton, age 49, of Mountain City, passed away Monday, January 23, 2006 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

Doug was a native of Wilmington, Delaware and a son of Rilda Mahala Rash and the late Robert Bruce Shelton. He was a member of God’s Country Church.

In addition to his father, he was also preceded in death by two brothers, Bobby Joe Shelton and Bill Shelton and his sister, Carol Dean Shelton.

Survivors include his mother and step father, Rilda and Roy Rash of Mountain City; two sisters, Phyllis Osborne of West Grove, Pa and Annette Shelton of South Carolina; his fiancé, Rhonda Proffitt of Mountain City;  and two step-sisters, Eva Jo Jones and Terri Rash, both of Morehead City, SC..

In lieu of flowers, the family asked that memorial contributions be sent to God’s Country Church, Building Fund, 1568 Crossroads Drive, Mountain City, TN 37683.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 7 pm on Thursday, January 26, 2006 at God’s Country Church. A memorial service will be conducted at 7:00 pm following the service.

 

 

 

 

Rose Morefield

 

Rose Justeen “Mary Alice” Morefield, age 71, of Sugar Creek Road, Laurel Bloomery, passed away Monday, January 23, 2006 at her residence with her loved ones at her side. God came and took a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.

She was born in Johnson County on July 22, 1934 to the late Rufus and Lula Pennington.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer E. Morefield and one sister, Luclie Goisline. Rose was employed at Mountain City Glove Plant for 30 years and was a member of State Line Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughter Debra Chambers and husband, Richard of Laurel Bloomery; her son Homer Todd Morefield of Laurel Bloomery; four granddaughters, Antheia, Dannielle, and Chelsea Chambers and Meghan Huskins and husband, Kevin, all of Laurel Bloomery; one great grandson, D. Connor Huskins; one sister Blanch Mae Campbell of Roseland, VA; three brothers, Mr. & Mrs. David Pennington of Laurel Bloomery, Mr. & Mrs. Blaine Pennington of Lenoir, NC, and Mr. & Mrs. Wayne Goisline of Laurel Bloomery; special caregivers, Roger and Mary Ann Morefield and Crystal Summerow, all of Laurel Bloomery.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:45 pm, Wednesday, January 25, 2006 at State Line Baptist Church. The service will follow at 8:00 pm with Rev. Derl McCloud, Rev. Steve Spratlin and Rev. Mike Bowers officiating. The interment and committal service will be conducted at 11:00 am Thursday, January 26th at State Line Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Steve Hampton, Deanie Gentry, Burton Yarber, Richard Morefield, Brandon Johnson, David Grub, Christopher Summerow, Anthony Summerow, and Kevin Greer. Honorary pallbearers will be Scott Morefield, Sam Morefield, Rector Paul Morefield, Roger Morefield, Ralph Morefield, Mike Tavalario, Luke Gentry, Charlie Martin, and Wayne Goisline.

Friends that cannot attend the service may stop by the funeral home Wednesday until 4:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may send memorials contributions to Relay for Life, Home Health, or Hospice in Rose J. Morefield’s name.


 

Thomas Edward May

 

Thomas Edward May, age 69, of BH Duncan Road, Zionville, NC, passed away Sunday, January 29, 2006 at Life Care Center of Banner Elk.

Thomas was a lifelong resident of Watauga County and was a son of the late Ralph G. May, Sr. and Hassie Lewis May. He worked for Watauga Ready Mix for 40 years and loved his farm. He was a hard worker and a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, R. G. May, Jr.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Wilma Cox May; two daughters, Edwina May of Boone and Mary Ann May Wilson and husband, Mike of Mountain City; two sons, Tom Edward May, Jr. and wife Sandra of Sugar Grove, NC and Tim May and wife, Melissa of Zionville; two sisters, Virginia Thomas and husband Grant of Zionville and Vivian Winters and husband, Clayton, Minister of Erwin, TN; brother, Ned May and wife Anita of Zionville; five grandchildren, April Nicole May, Montra Renee May, Samantha May, Alex May, and Blake May; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 pm, Tuesday, January 31, 2006 at Mountain City Funeral Home and at any other time at the farmhouse, 280 Oscar Road, Zionville, NC.

The funeral service for Mr. May will be conducted at 2:00 pm Wednesday, February 1st at Friendship Baptist Church with Pastor Maurice Ward officiating. Interment will follow in the May Family Farm Cemetery. Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Georgia Marie Johnson

 

Miss Georgia Marie Johnson, age 99, of Mountain City, passed away Monday, February 6, 2006 at Watauga Medical Center.

Miss Johnson was a lifelong resident of Johnson County and was a daughter of the late Arthur Glenn and Oma Payne Johnson. She was a retired school teacher and taught in the Johnson County School System and Bristol Tennessee School System. She was a member of the Johnson County retired Teachers Association, member of the Johnson County Historical Society, and a member of Daughters of the American Revolution. Georgia was an accomplished artist and author.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Beatrice Johnson and a brother, Orville Johnson.

Survivors included her cousins of the Johnson and Payne Families and her many friends.

The family will receive friends from 12 until 1 pm Wednesday, February 8, 2006 at the First United Methodist Church with the service to follow at 1 pm with James Hutchinson, Minister and Rev. Larry Rye officiating. Pallbearers will be men of First United Methodist Church. The interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park.

 

Kevin Ray Greene

 

Kevin Ray Greene, age 32, of Butler, passed away Saturday, February 4, 2006 in Butler.

Kevin was a lifelong resident of Johnson County and loved sports, hunting, fishing and spending time with his son.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Raymond R. Bunton and his paternal grandparents, Charles S. and Tina “Nannie” Greene.

Survivors include his father, Bob Greene of Butler; his mother, Clarice of Elk Park;  his son, Hunter Ray Greene and his mother, Alicia Morefield; daughter, Amber Bell Gilbert and her mother, Angela Gilbert; his maternal grandmother, Virginia Bunton of Butler; two brothers, Shannon Greene and Shane Greene, both of Butler;  brother-in-law, Joshua Morefield of Mountain City; aunts and uncles, Loetta Bright, Ginny Wagner, Gary Bunton, Teresa Bunton, Darrell and Ola Mae Greene and John David and Betty Lou Greene; special uncle, Roy Greene; nieces and nephews, Robert Wagner, Amos Dugger, Kayla Wagner, and Jeanetta Bunton; cousins, Michael Bright, Dennis and David Greene, Delores Stoveallt, Denise Embery, Author and Daphne Greene, Timothy Greene and Lois and Kenny Greene; special friends, Doug and Dan Arney, John Cogar, Johnny, Bobby, Timmy, and Jason Stanton, Terry Bunton, Eddie Phillips, John Wagner, Lloyd Wilson, Jeff Guy,  Dwight Greenwell, Bradley, Brian, and Travis Mink, and Wayne Lunceford and many others.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Dorothy Roark Price

 

Dorothy Roark Price, age 97, of Mountain City, passed away Sunday, February 5, 2006 at Mountain City Care Center.

She was born in Ashe County, NC  and was the daughter of the late Joseph L. and Mary M. Cole Roark. She resided in Lenoir, NC for many years before moving to Mountain City. She attended Taylorsville Church of God.

In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Ervil Louis Price; a daughter, Carol Price Trivette; a son, Roger Price and nine sisters and two brothers..

Survivors include three daughters, Nell Price Sluder and Lena Price Gore and husband John, all of Mountain City, and Sophia Price Parker and husband Russell of Lenoir, NC; two sons, Ervil “Bud” Price, Jr.  and wife Janet of California and Ronnie Price and wife Elaine of Lenoir; 18 grandchildren and 36 great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:45 pm, Thursday, February 9, 2006 at Mountain City Funeral Home. The service will follow at 8 pm. Pallbearers will be family and friends.  The committal service and interment will be conducted at 11 am Friday, February 10th at Price Cemetery, Creston, NC.  Friends may call any time at the home of her daughter, Lena Gore, 125 Hemlock St., Mountain City, TN.

 

 

 

Helton Wilson

 

Helton Wilson, of Mountain City, passed away Thursday, February 23, 2006 at Johnson county Health Center due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

 

Helton was a lifelong resident of Johnson County and was the son of the late Berdie Lawrence Miller. He was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, a member of Taylorsville Masonic Lodge # 243 F&AM and a member of Maple Chapter # 79 Order of the Eastern Star. Helton was employed at IRC for 34 years and loved his work. He adored his grandchildren, who were the love of his life. He was a member and trustee of Zionville Baptist Church.

 

In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his wife’s parents, Henry Miller, Georgia and Eugene Morris.

 

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Barbara Miller Wilson; his daughter, Sandra Wilson of Stoney Creek; his son, Wayne Wilson and wife Sherry of Mountain City; sister, Sue Scott and husband Julius of Zionville; six grandchildren, Christopher Potter, Travis Taylor and Kayla Taylor, all of Stoney Creek, Shane Wilson, April Wilson and Stephanie Matheson, all of Mountain City; niece, Vicki Parsons and husband Greg; aunt, Ruth Oliver; sisters-in-law; Rebecca Wagner and husband John, Ollie Phipps and husband Hoover and Dora Love and daughter Carol; several cousins, and his extended family at IRC who he loved dearly.

 

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:45 p.m. Saturday, February 25, 2006 at Mountain City Funeral Home with Eastern Star Service to follow at 8:45 p.m. The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, February 26th at Zionville Baptist Church with Pastor Carl Johnson officiating. The graveside service will be conducted by Taylorsville Masonic Lodge in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Christopher Potter, Shane Wilson, Travis Taylor, Freddie Phipps, Jeff Wagner, Jimmy Phipps, R. D. Oliver, Johnny Lawrence, and Frank Lawrence. Honorary pallbearers will be Wayne Starns and employees of IRC, George Ashley, Darrell Potter, Mickey Taylor, Tommy Proffitt, Lynn Lawrence, Burl Brown, Glen Wallace, Gene Brown, Jim Boone, Chester Reece, Barton Lawrence, Bruce Wallace, Eugene Shoun, Landon May, Bill Wallace, member of Taylorsville Masonic Lodge, Members of the Adult Men’s Sunday School Class of Zionville Baptist Church, the 2002 Grand Family OES and members of TN Grand Chapter.

Carfie Bunton

 

Carfie Bunton, age 85, of Mountain City, passed away Monday, February 20, 2006 at Frye Regional Medical Center, Hickory, NC.

Carfie was born December 7, 1920 to the late John D. and Elsie Reeder Vaughn. She was a member of the Eastern Star, American Legion Auxiliary, Advisory Council for the Senior Citizens, Advisory Board for the Senior Citizens, Johnson County Cancer support Group, Retired Senior volunteer Group, Art Club, and was a recipient of 2004 Volunteer Armchair Quarterback Award Winner of the Tennessee Titans for the Senior Citizen Center. She was a member of Roan Creek Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carroll “Cad” Bunton; two sisters, Eddress Vaughn and Clair Vaughn; three brothers, Bill, Robert and Johnie D. Vaughn; and a granddaughter, Melissa Bunton.

Survivors include two daughters, Janie Nelson and husband, Tommy of Mountain City and Linda McGuire and husband, Raymond of Murfreesboro, TN; son, Philip R. Bunton of Mountain City; sister, Carol Dean of Akron, Ohio; three brothers, Comar Vaughn and Terry Vaughn, both of Akron, Ohio, and Jacob Vaughn of Austin, Texas; ten grandchildren, Melodie, Justin, Wesley, Angie, Danny, Chris, Tim, Raymond, Jack, and Tony; four great grandchildren, Donald “Josh”, Matthew, Laurana, and Hope; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:45 pm Wednesday, February 22, 2006 at Mountain City Funeral Home with the service to follow at 8 pm with Pastors Monroe Cooke and Ray Slemp officiating.  Music will be provided by the Sugar Grove Baptist Church Quartet. The committal service and interment will be conducted at 11 am Thursday, February 23rd at Sugar Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Jimmy Brown

 

Jimmy Brown, age 45, of Mountain City, passed away Saturday, February 18, 2006 at his residence.

Jimmy was born in Hockessin, Delaware on August 11, 1960 to the late Frank and Madge Potter Brown. He was a lifetime member of Johnson County Rescue Squad and a past member of Trade Fire Department. He was a member of Shady Valley Presbyterian Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Jean McMahan and a brother, Jerry Brown.

Survivors include his wife, Lisa Levy Brown; three sisters, Nancy Hughes and husband Bill of Mountain City, Pat Thomas and husband, David of Zionville, and Sue Greer and husband, Tommy of Creston; one brother, Bart Brown and wife, Vioda of Rising Sun, MD; his brother-in-law, Gregory Levy of Buffalo, NY; several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles and his best friend Jake.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:45 pm Tuesday, February 21, 2006 at Mountain City Funeral Home with the service to follow at 8 pm with Pastors Ted Lewis and Shannon Courtner officiating. The committal service and interment will be conducted at 10 am Wednesday, February 22nd at Zionville Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Eddie Tester, Gary Hughes, Willie DeBord, Joe Barlow, Bill Hughes, Paul Anderson, and David Thomas. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Johnson County Rescue Squad, staff of Johnson County Health Center, staff of FMC – Dialysis, Dr. Jim Shine, and Dr. Leslie Panus and Associates.

J. D. Harris

 

J. D. “Bud” Harris, age 64, of Mountain City, passed away Monday, February 13, 2006 at his residence.

Bud was born in Ashe County, NC and was a son of the late John A. and Nellie E. Testerman Harris. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army, serving in Vietnam. He was of the Church of God Faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Helen Blevins, Katherine Honaker, Ivolee Leach and Nina Loggins; and a brother, Cecil John Harris.

Survivors include two sisters, Maude Blevins of Jefferson, NC and Eula Sullins of Lansing, NC; brother, Jack Harris of Ashland, VA and several nieces and nephews.

A private graveside service will be conducted Sunday, February 19, 2006.

 

 

J.C. Cuddy

 

J.C. Cuddy, age 78, of Chuckey, Tennessee, formerly of Mountain City, passed away February 26, 2006 at his residence.

J.C. was born April 16, 1927
