Ryan Keith Motsinger

 

Ryan Keith Motsinger, age 40, of Mountain City, passed away Monday, January 1, 2007 at Watauga Medical Center.

 

Ryan was a born on February 10, 1966 in Winston Salem, North Carolina. He loved his family and his children were his life. Ryan was employed at Hanes Brand (National Textiles). He was a veteran of the U. S. Army and a member of Roan Creek Baptist Church.

 

Ryan was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Wilson Motsinger and Henry Bodford.

 

Survivors include his wife, Kathy Brown Motsinger; two daughters, Kandas Motsinger of Johnson City, Courtney Motsinger of Mountain City; son, Austin Motsinger of Mountain City; his parents, Larry and Wanda Bodford Motsinger of Rockhill, SC; two brothers, Neal Motsinger and wife Tay of Charlotte, NC and Jeff Motsinger and wife Taunda of Mountain City; maternal grandmother, Elsie Bodford; paternal grandmother, Frances Highfill; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

 

The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Thursday, January 4, 2007 at Roan Creek Baptist Church with the service to follow at 8:00 p.m. with Rev. Derl McCloud and Rev. Ron Owens officiating. Pallbearers will be Norman Tester, Timmy Tester, Jonathan Lewis, Billy Payne, Billy Heck, Shannon Shepherd, Melvin Humphrey, and Terry Matheson. Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Heck, Jerry Whitener, Charles Osborne, Eddie Rhymer, and Kurt Wilson. The committal service and interment will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 5th at Sunset Memorial Park with Rev. Bill Worley officiating.

Bruce E. McGlamery

 

Bruce E. McGlamery, age 69, of Trade, passed away Sunday, January 07, 2007 at Johnson City Medical Center.

 

Bruce was a lifelong resident of Johnson County and was born on December 31, 1937 to the late Raymond and Jessie Neatherly McGlamery. He was a machine operator at Film Salvage and was a member of the Taylorsville Masonic Lodge # 243 F&AM where he served as Worshipful Master for two years. Bruce was a veteran of the U. S. Army. He was a member of the Trade United Methodist Church.

 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ray McGlamery.

 

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Virgie Arnold McGlamery; two sons, Jeff McGlamery of Trade and Lawrence McGlamery & wife Carolene of Butler; four sisters, Emily Shatley, Reba Hartzog and husband Wayne, and Betty Trivette, all of Lenoir and Annette Bentley and special brother-in-law James Revis of Statesville; brother, Hayden McGlamery of Trade; and several nieces and nephews.

 

The family will receive friends Tuesday, January 9, 2007 from 5:00 until 7:45 p.m. at Mountain City Funeral Home with the service to follow at 8:00 p.m. with Rev. Larry Rye, Jim Hutchinson, Minister and Rev. Ray Branch officiating. Pallbearers will be Tracy Atwood, Mark Wallace, Mike May, Blaine Snyder, Dick Grayson, and Bill Wallace. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Taylorsville Masonic Lodge, Dr. John Whitlock and Alf Wilson, Bill Moore, Terry and Jerry Jordan, Todd Grayson,  and employees of Film Salvage Co. A Masonic Service will be conducted immediately following the service by the Taylorville Masonic Lodge # 243 F&AM. The committal service and interment will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 10th at Trade United Methodist Church Cemetery. Military Rites will be conducted by Johnson County Honor Guard.

 


Jewel Thomas Cuddy

 

Jewel Thomas Cuddy, age 81, of Chuckey, TN, formerly of Mountain City, passed away Thursday, January 18, 2007 at her residence.

 

Jewel was born on February 8, 1925 in Trade, TN to the late Lundy and Pearl Clara Osborne Thomas. She was a store manager for Smithey’s Department Store and was also employed at Michael’s Department Store. She was a member of First Christian Church in Greeneville.

 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, J. C. Cuddy; daughter, Kathy Cuddy Arnold; infant son, Edward Cuddy; and two brothers, Ralph and Ross Thomas.

 

Survivors include her daughter, Nancy Cuddy Spears and husband Gary of Chuckey; brother, Dana Tommy Thomas and wife Janet of Mountain City; granddaughter, Tabitha Arnold of Mountain City; grandson, Brett Garland of Jonesborough; step-granddaughter, Chyanne Lipford; two nieces, Dianna Thomas of Reno, Nevada and Carol Roark of Trade, TN; two nephews, Eddie Thomas of Mountain City and David Thomas of Morristown; and several great nieces and nephews.

 

The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. Saturday, January 20, 2007 at Mountain City Funeral Home with the service to follow at 3:00 p.m. with Pastor Charles Reece and Pastor Dwayne Dickson officiating. Burial will follow in Phillippi Cemetery. Pallbearers will be members of the Mountain City Fire Dept. Honorary pallbearers will be nephews, Eddie Thomas, David Thomas, Marshall Cuddy, Toby Cuddy, and Max Cuddy.

 

The family will also receive friends at the home of her brother, Tommy Thomas, 283 Oak Hills Lane, Mountain City.

 

Jeffery Lynn Pleasant

 

Jeffery Lynn Pleasant, age 38, of Boone, formerly of Mountain City passed away Sunday, January 14, 2007 at his residence.

 

Jeffery was born on March 5, 1968 in Carter County. He loved hunting and collecting arrowheads. He was currently employed at Southern Agriculture through Able Body Labor.

 

Survivors include his wife; Connie Proffitt Pleasant; daughter, Kala Lowe of Mountain City; parents, Bennie Hubert and Ida Belle Pleasant of Mountain City; step-daughter, April Proffitt of Mountain City; step-son, Cody Proffitt; sisters, Janet Mahala, Patricia Payne, both of Mountain City and Melissa Scott of Creston, NC; brothers, Jimmy Parker of Butler, Benjamin Pleasant of Lenoir, NC and Michael Pleasant of Mountain City; a granddaughter, Kaylyn Lynn; and several nieces and nephews.

 

The family will receive friends from 5:30 until 7:00 p.m. Thursday, January 18, 2007 at Mountain City Funeral Home with the service to follow at 7:00 p.m. with Andy Watson officiating. Pallbearers will be Joshua Payne, Jacob Payne, Dallas Vaughn, Cody Proffitt, Steve Payne, and Billy Scott. Honorary pallbearers will be Gary Mahala, Employees of Able Body Labor and Southern Agriculture. The committal service and interment will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 19th at Phillippi Cemetery.

Burl Shelton Perkins

 

Burl Shelton Perkins, age of 83, of 150 Butler Lane, Mountain City, went to be with the Lord, Monday, January 15, 2007 at Life Care Center of Elizabethton.

 

Burl was native of Johnson County and was born on August 14, 1923 to the late Roscoe and Alice Potter Perkins. He was retired from Ford Motor Co. after 31 years of service and also worked for Film Processing Co. for 10 years. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army and served during WWII.  He was a member of the Taylorsville Masonic Lodge No. 243 F&AM and a member of Bethany Baptist Church.

 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Perkins who passed away December 15, 1996; two brothers, Hartley Potter and Earl Perkins; and two sisters, Blanche Stout and Cleo Colson.

 

Survivors include his wife, Lee Norris Perkins; his daughter, Barbara Bunten and husband Bob of Mountain City; son, Ronnie Perkins and wife Kathy of Butler; step-son, Rev. Harold Mains and wife Anita of Elizabethton; eight grandchildren; six great grandchildren; brother, Eddie Perkins of Mountain City; two sisters, Ruby Slemp of Mountain City and Doris Blanche of Bettsville, MD; and several nieces and nephews.

 

The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 17, 2007 at Mountain City Funeral Home with the service to follow at 7:00 p.m. with Rev. Harold Mains and Rev. Ralph Howard officiating. Pallbearers will be Steve Arnold, Jeff Tester, Buck Kirby, Dion Hensley, Kenneth McQueen, and Bruce Reece. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill “Bubby” Slemp, Steve Courtner, Michael Mains, David Bunten, Ryan Perkins, Daniel Swift, and Johnson County Rescue Squad. Masonic Rites will be conducted by Taylorsville Masonic Lodge No. 243 F&AM immediately after the service. The committal service and interment will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 18th at Sunset Memorial Park. Military Rites will be conducted by the Johnson County Honor Guard.

 

Friends may call at any time at the home of his daughter, Barbara Bunten or his son, Ronnie Perkins.

 

 

 

Jimmy D. Norris

 

Jimmy D. Norris, age of 67, of Shingletown Road, Mountain City, went home to be with the Lord Monday, January 15, 2007 at his residence.

 

Jimmy was born on February 14, 1939 in Johnson County to the late Joe and Ila Reece Norris. He loved hunting, fishing and his family. He was a member of Wesley Chapel Methodist Church.

 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Laura Sue Norris and Josephine Revelle; and two brothers, Junior Norris and Mack Norris.

 

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Carolyn Taylor Norris; three sons, Bobby Dean Norris and special friend Jenny Buttry, Gary Steven Norris and Jeffery Allen Norris and wife Sheila, all of Mountain City; seven sisters, Elizabeth Horne, Carrie Lee Pennington, Kathleen Absher, Ruby Harper, Betty Stanley, Julie Stanley, and Louise Morefield, all of Mountain City; brother, Tommy Jack Norris of Chilhowie, VA; six grandchildren, Dustin Burgess, Amy Norris, Joby Norris, Regina Swiney, David Burgess, and Sara Buttry; two great grandchildren, Dakota and Daniel Swiney; several nieces and nephews and special friends, Joe Baird, Lark Lewis, John Greer, and Russell Wright..

 

The family will receive friends 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 17, 2007 at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church with the service to follow at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Steve McCready and Rev. Billy Morefield officiating. Burial will follow in Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bennie Campbell, Paul Pennington, Albert Hague, Doyle Carlson, Clifton Storie, and Adam Campbell. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. James Blon, Dr. Raina Sluder and Cassie Pennington

Mary Z. Watson Day

 

Mary Z. Watson Day, age 76, of Boone, NC, formerly of 220 N. Murphy St., Mountain City, passed away, Tuesday, January 23, 2007 at Glenbridge Health and Rehabilitation in Boone, NC.

 

Mary was born on June 4, 1930 in Carter County, Tennessee to the late Turner and Blanch Miller Watson. She was a professional fish fly tier. She was a member of God’s Country Church.

 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde J. Day.

 

Survivors include her son, V. J. “Jay” Day and wife Joy of Mountain City.

 

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:45 p.m. Thursday, January 25, 2007 at Mountain City Funeral Home with the service to follow at 8:00 p.m. with Pastor Ron Manuel and Pastor Jeff Meadows officiating. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Woods, Clifford Woods, David Manuel, Larry Danner, John Holloway, and David Holloway. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Robert Griffith, staff of Glenbridge Health and Rehabilitation, and the men of God’s Country Church. A private committal service and interment will be conducted Friday, January 26th at White Cemetery on Shulls Mills Rd, Boone, NC.

Charles Edward Stanley

 

Charles Edward Stanley, age 65, of Mountain City, passed away Wednesday, January 31, 2007 at his residence.

 

Charles was born on May 18, 1941 in Johnson County to the late Sollie and Mae Winters Stanley. He liked farming, the outdoors and woodworking. He loved and was loved by his family and will truly be missed. He was a member of Mountain City Church of Christ.

 

Survivors include his wife, Betty Norris Stanley; one daughter, Teresa Ransom & husband Roger of Butler; one son, David Stanley of Mountain City; two sisters, Virginia Tester and Judy Hicks and husband Freddie; four brothers, Odell Stanley, Carl Stanley and wife Eva, Delmar Stanley and wife Evelyn, and Bert Stanley, all of Mountain City; two granddaughters, Dava Stanley of Johnson City and Jennifer Esquibel and husband Mike of Springfield, MO; one great grandson, Gage Raiden Haney of Springfield, MO; and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

 

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Saturday, February 3, 2007 at Mountain City Funeral Home with the service to follow at 8:00 p.m. with Pastor Everett Morefield and Pastor Darrell Broking officiating. Graveside services will be conducted at a later date.

Mae Garland

Mae Garland, age 72, of Shady Valley, passed away Wednesday, January 31, 2007 at Johnson County Community Hospital Mae was born on February 13, 1934 in Johnson County to the late Bill and Laura Greer Walker.  She worked at the Mountain City Glove Plant for 27 years and was a member of First Freewill Baptist Church of Mountain City.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Garland; two sons, Reford Garland and Tom Garland; three brothers, T. Walker, Hobert Walker and E. G. Walker.

Survivors include three daughters, Ruby Pennington and husband J. D. of Shady Valley, Elizabeth Woods and husband James of Shady Valley, and Linda Eastridge and husband Mike of Laurel Bloomery; two sons, Conley Garland of Blountville and George Garland and wife Thelma of Shady Valley; sister, Mary Melendez; grandchildren, James Pennington, Adam Woods, Kristy Eastridge, Lester Garland, and Rebecca Webb; and two great grandchildren, Shane Webb and Elijah Webb.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday, February 2, 2007 at First Freewill Baptist Church with the service to follow at 8:00 p.m. with Pastor Ted Reynolds and Pastor Frank Woods officiating. Pallbearers will be Lester Garland, James Woods, Mike Eastridge, Carl Walsh, Josh Webb, and Charles McQueen. The committal service and interment will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 3rd in Shady Valley Memorial Gardens.

Jean Pennington

 

Jean Pennington, age 78, of Highway 421 N, Mountain City, passed away, Tuesday, January 30, 2007 at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem.

 Jean was born on August 14, 1928 in West Virginia to the late Albert and Maggie Tucker Snow. Jean enjoyed traveling as a military wife for 26 years, 3 months, and 4 days. She was a member of First Assembly of God Church.

 In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Elwood Snow and Walt Snow.                                         

 Survivors include her husband of 53 years, James V. Pennington, Jr.; son, Tim Pennington and wife DeAnna of Abingdon; brother, Jake Snow of Sunnyville, CA;  grandsons, Matthew Pennington and wife Billie of Mountain City; twp great grandsons, Cody Humphrey, and Josh Humphrey; great granddaughter, Hallie McCloud; and one niece, Barbara Snow of Sunnyville, CA.

 The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 3, 2007 at Mountain City Funeral Home with the service to follow at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Jeff Meadows officiating. The interment service will be private.

 The family will also receive friends at the home, 2149 Highway 421 N., Mountain City.

 

 

 

Lucille E. Wills

 

 

Lucille E. Wills, age 92, of Mountain City, passed away Wednesday, January 24, 2007 at Mountain City Care Center following a long illness.

 

Lucille was born on January 18, 1915 in Watauga County, NC to the late John and Nancy Swift Eggers. She was a member of Valley View United Methodist Church where she was a Sunday School Teacher and a member of the Valley View UMW..

 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Earl Wills in 1984; three sisters, Rhoda Fletcher, Ada Elliott, and Ora Isaacs; and four brothers, Charles, Ellis, Arlie and Dexter Eggers.

 

Survivors include her daughter, Mary Grindstaff of Mountain City; three sons, Gale Wills and wife Tanya of Pahokee, FL, Jimmy Wills and wife Joan of Mountain City, and David Wills and wife Janice of Claremont, NC; seven grandchildren, Hal Wills, Pat Wills, Earl Wills, Jamie McCarron, Nina Wills, Teresa Taylor, and Sarah Prencipe; seven great grandchildren, Alisha Wills, Brad Wills, Cynthia Wills, Evan Taylor, Jordan Wills, Tyler Wills, and Bennett McCarron; and several nieces and nephews.

 

The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:30 p.m. Sunday, January 28, 2007 at Mountain City Funeral Home with the service to follow at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Don Everhart and Rev. Ricky Campbell officiating. Burial will follow in Phillippi Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Hal Wills, Pat Wills, Brad Wills, Jake Lewis, Carl Wiggins, Earl Davis, Jim Payne, and Bill Gentry.

 

Friends may also visit with the family at the home of her daughter, Mary, 762 Circle Dr., Mountain City or the home of her son, Jimmy, 1340 Hwy. 421 N., Mountain City.

 

Lena E. Bunton

 

Lena E. Bunton, age 92, of Butler, passed away Monday, February 26, 2007 at her residence.

 

Mrs. Bunton was born on July 13, 1914 in Johnson County to the late Roe and Martha Atwood Gwinn. Lena was an avid reader of books and liked her flowers. She was a member of Bakers Gap Baptist Church.

 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Tom Bunton; sister, Lennis Stansbery and four brothers, Charles, Wilburn, Thomas C. and William C. Gwinn.

 

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

 

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Thursday, March 1, 2007 at Mountain City Funeral Home with the service to follow at 8:00 p.m. with Rev. Carl Swift officiating. Pallbearers will be Dave Gwinn, Joe Gwinn, Carrol Chappell, Keith Guinn, Aaron Baird, and Johnny Stanton. Honorary pallbearers will be Wade Snyder, Dave Dugger, Dr. John Whitlock, Bobby Stanton, Timmy Stanton, Ron Murphy, Marvin Gwinn, Mac Atwood, Kyle Baker, Phil Bunton, and Terry Baird. The committal service and interment will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 2nd in Bakers Gap Cemetery.

Randy Kevin Brown

 

Randy Kevin Brown, a special angel, age 32, of Butler, TN, went to be with Lord Sunday, February 25, 2007, at Johnson City Medical Center.

 

Kevin was born on February 26, 1974 in Johnson County to Randy Wayne Brown and Rose Phillips Brown.

 

Kevin was preceded in death by his brother, Adam Mark Brown; his paternal grandfather, Melvin Brown and an aunt, Margie Maxwell.

 

Survivors include his mother, Rose Brown of Butler; his father Randy Wayne Brown and wife Debbie of Bristol, TN; maternal grandparents, Earl and Winnie Phillips of Butler; paternal grandmother, Virginia Brown of Mountain City; step-sister, Jessica Lyons of Bluff City; step-brother, Michael Brown of Bristol, TN; aunts, Louise Smith and husband Bonnell and Emma Jean Hampton and husband David, all of Butler; uncles, Jim Phillips of Butler, Tim, Steve, and Jerry Brown of Mountain City, and Ray Brown of Pennsylvania; special friends, Brother Leonard Fletcher and wife Linda and Helen Greer; and several cousins.

 

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 28, 2007 at Dyson Grove Baptist Church with the service to follow at 8:00 p.m. with Brother Leonard Fletcher officiating. Pallbearers will be Steve Laws, Carl Hatley, Keith Brown, Daniel Laws, Johnny Whaley and Dean Fletcher. Honorary pallbearers will be Johnson County Rescue Squad and Dr. Anna Marie Whitmer. The committal service and interment will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 1st in Snyder Cemetery.

Viola Marie Hall

 

Viola Marie Hall, age 91, of Mountain City passed away Sunday, February 25, 2007 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

 

Mrs. Hall was born on May 2, 1915 in Johnson County to the late Millard Jethro and Mattie Virginia Stewart Hammons. She was an avid gardener and liked her flowers. She loved her family and will be truly missed. She was a charter member of Johnson County Rescue Squad Crewettes and a lifelong member of Hammons Chapel Christian Church.

 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice Hall.

 

Survivors include her daughter, Carol Clifton and husband, Tommy of Knoxville; three sons, Jack Hall and wife Mary of Jonesborough, Clifford Hall and wife Pat of Chattanooga, and Barton Hall and wife Maxine of Mountain City; two sisters, Mary Ellen Brown of Mountain City and Gladys Arnold of Bristol, TN; six grandchildren, Donna West of Winston-Salem, Gary Hall and wife Kathy of Oak Ridge, Mitchell Hall and wife Kathleen of Knoxville, Victoria Cheesman and husband Rob of Knoxville, Greg Hall of Mountain City, and Steven Hall and wife Jennifer Hall of Mountain City; two step-grandchildren, James Wright and wife Maria of Maryville, TN and Eric Wright and wife Leesa of Chattanooga; four great grandchildren, Nathan Hall and Grace Hall, both of Oak Ridge, Calleigh Cheesman of Knoxville, and John Robert Hall of Mountain City; six step-great grandchildren, Amanda Wright, Jason Wright, Carol Ann Wright, Julia Wright,  James Wright, Jr., and Dakota Brown; all of Maryville; two sisters-in-law, Faye Hall and Edith Hall; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Gary Hall, Mitchell Hall, Greg Hall, Steven Hall, Rob Cheesman, Nathan Hall, and Joe Slomka. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Johnson County Rescue Squad, members of Johnson County Rescue Squad Crewettes, and Dr. Jim Shine. The

committal service and interment will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 28th in Phillippi Cemetery.

 

 

Jesse “Bob” Shomate

 

Jesse “Bob” Shomate, age 55, of Mountain City, passed away Monday, February 19, 2007 at Johnson City Medical Center.

 

Jesse was born on February 11, 1952 in Glades Springs, VA to Georgia Walsh Shomate and the late Spencer Shomate.

 

Survivors include his fiancée, Lisa Diane Oliver; daughter, Amanda Shomate of Jonesborough; two sons, Jesse Shomate & fiancée Tarah Gentry of Unicoi and Mickey Shomate of Kingsport; his mother, Georgia Shomate of Mountain City;  two sisters, Diane Wagner and husband Robert of Mountain City and Dixie Widner and husband Ronnie of Laurel Bloomery; three brothers, Bill Shomate and wife Joyce of Ashland, Ohio; Dave Shomate, of Tampa Bay, FL, and Rick Shomate and wife Sheila of Hudson, NC; two grandchildren, Braden Michael Shomate and Tyler Lee Shomate; and several nieces and nephews.

 

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 21, 2007 at Mountain City Funeral Home with the service to follow at 8:00 p.m.
